Risk Assessment in China: Release of a new Draft-Guideline by the ICAMA

7 January, 2015

On December 12, 2014 the Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, Ministry of Agriculture  (ICAMA) has released a Draft-Guideline for Pesticide Risk Assessment in China for public consultation until Feb, 15th 2015. According to the Draft-Guideline pesticide risk assessment in China has five protection targets, namely aquatic ecosystems, birds, bees, silkworm, groundwater and non-target arthropods. With this Draft-Guideline ICAMA makes a big step towards the official introduction of modelling tools in exposure assessment. Along with the Draft-Guidelines ICAMA also published two exposure models (China-PEARL and TOP-RICE) in which scenarios and parameters have been adapted to conditions representative in China. Releasing such detailed information on the procedure of pesticide risk assessment is a strong indicator that risk assessment actually needs to get done by the industry in the future and that ICAMA will reserve itself the right to implement risk management.
